Sometime in the next twenty four hours, Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer will take the stage at a New York press conference and officially announce the hardware for Microsoft newly developed Windows Phone 7, Microsoft’s choice operating system for mobile devices and successor to its previous operating system for mobile devices, windows mobile that quickly fell out of favour as soon as apple’s iPhone was launched. Along with this, the CEO is also expected to announce the carriers for but AT&T is already ahead of the others as they too will be speaking at the conference.
But this time around, Microsoft won’t be going into their launch with all the pomp and pride with which they would release a new operating system for their P.Cs as the area of mobile communications hasn’t been quite as friendly to the computer giant as it has been to their main competitor apple
Windows mobile
Microsoft’s previous quest in the arena through windows mobile having generated a lot of excitement and was greeted with as much enthusiasm was quick to disappoint as critics quickly rushing to point out the fact that the operating system was overloaded with features and quite user unfriendly. Some even went as far as accusing Microsoft of trying to stuff a whole P.C. into a phone.
In the end, Microsoft’s own designers had to come out to admit that instead of giving the users the functionality they needed, the phones instead gave too much such as to overwhelm.

The iPhone
With the harsh reception that had greeted the windows mobile, Microsoft was working overtime behind the scenes as far back as 2004 for a replacement but in 2007 before Microsoft could recover let alone find a footing in the mobile industry once again, along came one Steve Jobs with a rude surprise and the device that struck the windows mobile its death blow. This was the launch of the iPhone but it wasn’t the launch that hurt Microsoft the most but its success. With sky high sales and massive amounts of profit, the iPhone was quickly becoming more than just a passing fad in the industry. It was no doubt here to stay.
A New Face
The windows mobile 7 that had been under development at Microsoft had simply been a revamp of the windows mobile but as the industry took on a new direction with the iPhone, it was decided that Microsoft would have to start from scratch to even dream of catching up with apples iPhone and thus in 2008 the Windows phone 7 was started from the ground up. A more user friendly, functional approach was picked this time as the more business oriented windows mobile approach was dropped.
